When we talk about museums in Madrid, we all think about  Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen. Apart from these big names, there are quite a few other museums very well known by locals, but less famous among visitors from other countries.

Sorolla Museum is a tribute to Sorolla, the painter of natural light.

This museum is housed in the former painter’s home and studio, and it features numerous paintings by the artist. The museum will provide an insight into Joaquín Sorolla’s evolution as a painter. Visitors can see the artist’s different stylistic and thematic periods, such as his paintings on social criticism, family portraits, works depicting typical local customs, and self-portraits. 

The Impressionist landscapes are the key works in the artist’s colorist period. Besides these, there are other items on display, including sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, old photographs, etc. With our local official guide, you will discover not only the artist but also the man that loved his family: his wife, Clotilde, that Sorolla called “my minister of Finances” and their three children, essential elements in his art and life. 

Lázaro Galdiano Museum has an outstanding collection of paintings, with works by some of the great masters, as well as other forms of art from all periods of history. The pieces in the museum were brought together by José Lázaro Galdiano, a passionate collector. 

The collection comprises more than 12.600 paintings, sculptures, silver items, jewels, enameled and marble items, fabrics, weapons… from the 6th century B.C. to the early 20th century. The various European schools are represented in the art gallery, with works by Hieronymus Bosch, Cranach, Reynolds and Constable, among others. The core, however, is the Spanish section, with Gothic and Renaissance panels, and works by El Greco, Ribera, Zurbarán, Velázquez, Murillo, Carreño, etc., and an important series of paintings by Goya.
