The Basque coast close to San Sebastian is an area of impressive green landscapes and extensive beaches. The region offers countless attractive possibilities, gourmet experiences, unique museums and a long etcetera. Many of these options are concentrated in Getaria and its neighborhood.

Getaria is a beautiful seaside location about 30′ drive from San Sebastian: the village is renowned as the birthplace of Juan Sebastián Elcano – the first explorer that fulfilled the circumnavigation of the Earth, back in the 15th C. – and the fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga. 

But this spot is also home of the DOP Txakoli de Getaria, a slightly sparkling, young white wine whose vineyards grow on the slopes of the surrounding hills, next to the sea. We will visit one of these «txakoli» wineries, which are small family businesses, with a reduced production and not connected with large international brands. If good wine were not enough, the traditional restaurants in Getaria, with their open-air grill stoves, are famous for serving the highest quality grilled fish in Spain: after a nice stroll through the village, we will enjoy lunch in one of these restaurants, a menu based on the fresh catch of the day.

Last but not least: the Balenciaga Museum, also in the same place, is a mandatory pilgrimage for fashionistas. After lunch, you will be able to visit this museum and admire some of the masterpieces created by the man who, in the words of Coco Chanel “was the only true couturier among us”.
