Poblet monastery is a large Cistercian abbey located in the south of Catalonia (135 km from Barcelona), and one of the biggest religious communities in Spain. Built around a large Romanesque church from the 12th century, this majestic and austere monastery was fortified as a Royal residence in the Middle Ages. It contains the pantheon of the kings of the Kingdom of Catalonia and Aragon, who ruled from the 12th to the 15th century, in front of the main altar. UNESCO declared Poblet a protected World Heritage Site in 1991. Nowadays it is still in use, housing a community of Cistercian monks who still follow a hard working lifestyle, dedicated to work, pray and study. Our expert guide will show you around and explain the secrets of this 900-year-old monastery, as well as the lifestyle led by the monk community.
This excursion can be extended with a wine tasting experience in a thousand-year-old castle, overlooking the monastery’s vineyards, today operated by a well-known winery.
