Let’s discover this charming little city located 100 km north of Barcelona which became a rich trading crossroads in the Middle Ages, followed in the 19th century with its own industrial revolution, based on paper and cork manufacturing. The old city offers a pleasant stroll through its narrow pedestrian streets, flanked by local craft shops, palaces and the imposing cathedral on top of a hill. Girona offers from an hour-long easy stroll through the old town, up to a three-hour tour including a visit to the cathedral and its treasures, such as the huge unique thousand-year-old Tapestry of Creation, a tour inside the nine hundred-year-old public baths or the most fascinating Jewish museum in Catalonia. Girona was used as a set in the TV series Game of Thrones in 2015 because of the large area of the city that still preserves its medieval appearance.
Located 50 min by car west of Girona, this small village was a rich county capital on the trade routes of the Middle Ages. An expert guide will take you along the impressive old bridge over the Fluvià River into a maze of narrow streets and squares, dotted with beautiful ancient palaces and churches. The most treasured heritage building in Besalú is the only existing Mikveh (ritual Jewish bath) in the Iberian Peninsula, which dates back to the 12th century. Incredibly, it was discovered in 1964 by chance, when the owner of the house which had been built on top decided to carry out some major renovation works. Today it is considered a very valuable original work of Jewish heritage. The walking tour along cobblestone streets in a pedestrian area may last 1 or 2 hours.
